The re-emergence into national politics of Chris Andrews gives Sinn Fein a much-needed middle-class boost, as well as allowing it to retain its ‘edge’, given his republican pedigree and genuine activism.

Likewise, with the Seanad issue. Some are surprised that Sinn Fein has joined forces with FG in seeking abolition of the second chamber, but its positioning allows SF to be both more mainstream – but also radical, in denouncing the Seanad as ‘redundant and elitist’ (a natural republican instinct). It can thus take the ground from FF, which is seeking to retain a second chamber, but failing to explain why.
