With so many political groupings, what can new parties offer?

‘We also have the expansion of Fine Gael’s right-of-centre ‘five-a-side’ group into a healthy dozen TDs – which reflects not only pressure on the party to keep to its bailout targets but is also a protest at the control-freakery and the intense whip system of an all-centralising party HQ. It all makes for an interesting time during the alleged lull of the summer break. But with such variety in the existing parties, it makes one wonder: what is the point of new ones?  For example, Lucinda Creighton is apparently interested in exploring a ‘family values’, right-of-centre political movement among FG types.’
