We simply can’t sustain our high level of welfare spendingImage

So Minister Joan Burton sees the welfare system as a sort of alternative economy, fuelling economic growth. But how does she think hard-pressed people who are still working will feel about this? People who have been hit with endless taxes and charges and who must sometimes feel that they’d be better off in Joan Burton’s welfare economy? Once again, it is the ‘coping classes’ and the ‘squeezed middle’ who are taking the disproportionate pain and so they must continue to pay more to sustain this great welfare spend.

And what does it say about our hopes of getting competitive again and trying to get people into actual jobs, especially since they will now be lower-paid to begin with?
