Farce of all night abortion debate shows the pressing need for parliamentary reform



In terms of procedure and timekeeping, what the Oireachtas most resembles is the courts system, except that the legal world has the consolation of dealing with legislation in its most real and impactful way. But both have the genteel opening hours of late starts, early rises and long holidays, even if some of this is finally changing. Why, for example, did last night’s debate not begin on Monday instead of Wednesday? Why the family-unfriendly late hours, and rushed speeches by less-than-fresh TDs at 3am?
