Gerry Adams – incapable of being honest about IRA’s past

Gerry Adams recently did a RTE Prime Time interview to provide clarity on the IRA’s past. But his evasive and dissembling answers just made the situation worse.

Adams is not the person to do an explanation and recompense for the IRA’s past. He is incapable of answering a question on this without going into evasions, irrelevancies and outright denials. After all, this is a man who still denies that he was in the IRA himself and who denied, at the outset, any IRA involvement in the killing of Garda Jerry McCabe or in the Columbia Three or in the Northern Bank robbery. All these were knee-jerk denials, done instinctively: the tactical reaction of a man at war, where truth is the first casualty.

Three years ago, Adams was probably worse on these denials. In the same day, he not only denied that the IRA was responsible for the death of Charlie Adams whose ‘disappeared’ body had just been found, but at the same time he demanded a full inquiry into the Ballymurphy killings by British soldiers in 1971.

Thus, we had the dichotomy of his reaction to two different events. One was the discovery in north Monaghan of the remains of Charlie Armstrong, who was ‘disappeared’ by the IRA 29 years ago, for reasons that were never made clear. Except that Adams said there was “no evidence” that the IRA had killed him and added that anyway, “Who killed him is of secondary importance.”

Of secondary importance? Tell that to the judge or to his widow, who has waited 29 years to find her husband’s remains so that she can give him a Christian burial.
