Eamon Dunphy- A Football Life

The added value of Dunphy’s soccer commentary is that we get the application of his wider knowledge and opinion and this book reminds us of his often audacious but always stimulating insights. For example, on the the tendency of the talented Dutch football team to implode at big tournaments, Dunphy opines that “the advanced nature of civil and political freedoms in the Netherlands obviated the possibility of 25 men being able to accept the dictatorial control of a manager for the time needed to win a modern football tournament”. Not something you’ll get from a sterile Alan Shearer, or Alan Hansen, sitting on their say-nothing BBC couch.
